What sludge actually is

Central heating systems contain water that circulates between the boiler and the radiators. Over time, the inside of steel radiators rusts (slowly), copper pipework oxidises (slowly), and trace minerals from the original fill water settle out. The result is a black, magnetic sludge — mostly iron oxide, the same stuff as rust scale — that collects at the bottom of radiators, in the heat exchanger, and around the pump.

Sludge causes three real problems:

• Cold spots on radiators — sludge settles at the bottom, blocks circulation, and the lower third of the radiator runs cooler.
