Combi boiler

A combi (combination) boiler heats water on demand. When you open a hot tap, the boiler fires up and heats cold mains water as it flows through. Same boiler also drives the central heating circuit. No hot water cylinder, no cold water tank in the loft — the whole hot water system is the boiler itself plus the radiators.

Pros: compact, fits in a kitchen cupboard or airing cupboard, no stored hot water (no Legionella concerns), runs at full mains pressure, lower install cost. Cons: hot water flow rate is limited by the boiler’s kW output — if two people shower at once, both will have weaker flow. System boiler

A system boiler heats water for the central heating, and uses the same energy to heat a separate unvented hot water cylinder stored elsewhere in the house (usually airing cupboard or loft). Hot water comes from the cylinder, not the boiler. Most modern installs use an unvented cylinder running at full mains pressure (no header tank in the loft).
